Although getting porcelain veneers is one of the easiest ways to receive a new smile, the procedure may seem a little intimidating to someone who has never had one before and could take a week or two. In most cases, patients who see the skilled dentist can have their dental veneers placed in as few as two visits; however, this will depend on the patient’s overall oral health and any other dental procedures our doctor may recommend you have done before having veneers.

In urgent dental situations, seek an emergency dentist in Edmonton for immediate care. Receive prompt and effective treatment for dental emergencies.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin and individually made to fit over the frontal part of your teeth. These shells stick to your teeth; alter color, shape, size, or length and make them look better. Porcelain is commonly recommended for veneers because it resembles natural dental enamel and is extremely resistant. Veneers can address various dental issues, such as:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned or uneven teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

The steps followed every time porcelain veneers are put in are the following and are very well thought out to approximate beauty as much as possible.

The Procedure for Porcelain Veneers

It usually takes 2-3 visits to receive porcelain veneers and here is how the process generally goes.

Initial Consultation & Treatment Planing

The first step is to schedule an appointment with your dentist.  There will be a discussion between you and your dentist about what you want to achieve and what you expect. The dentist will then assess your teeth, or you might be required to have X-rays taken, or impressions of your teeth and mouth taken.

Tooth Preparation

In your subsequent session, your dentist prepares your teeth for the veneers. This entails shaving a part of the external layer of the teeth known as enamel, from the front side of all the teeth. This process is important as it helps the dentist to provide the best veneer fit and the shape of your gums.

Impressions

After preparing your teeth, your dentist will then take impressions of your teeth. These impressions are then forwarded to a dental laboratory, especially for the preparation of your veneers. It is advisable to note that this fabrication process may take approximately two weeks. In the meantime, your dentist will put on your teeth temporary veneers for protection of the prepared teeth.

Veneer Bonding

Once the custom veneers are received from the lab, a patient will come back to the dental office for a final fitting. Your dentist will then examine the fit and the colour of the veneers. It is at this stage that they will be adjusted, if needed. Veneers are positioned precisely to evaluate the fit, bite and aesthetic. Once the patient is happy and satisfied with the feel and look of veneers then the final step of cementation is done. Surface refinement that includes use of a clean, polish, and etch is done.

Veneer cement is used for the final placement as per manufacturer instructions. Last of all, the extra cement is scraped off and your dentist will polish and reshape to produce a correct occlusion.

Follow-Up Visit

A post-procedure appointment is generally set after couple of weeks of the procedure. This way your dentist will be able to ascertain the correct placement of veneers and gingival health. It is significant to have check-ups at least once in three to six months so that your veneers can be well-checked, and any problem solved as soon as possible.
